About This Speaker

Dave Meslin is multi-partisan and fiercely optimistic. His presentations focus on overcoming cynicism and creating a culture of participation. His unassuming presence, creativity and sense of humour keep audiences enthralled. Most importantly, Meslin encourages those present to find what matters to them and engage in promoting change through creative participation.

The Toronto Star has described him as a “mad scientist,” “a start-up genius,” and “a peripatetic public convener.” The Globe and Mail, meanwhile, simply calls him a “persuasive rabble-rouser.” He dances between mainstream politics and grassroots activism, and in doing so finds positive ways to bring them together and turn energy into action.

He authored Teardown: Rebuilding Democracy from the Ground Up. His TED talk, “The Antidote to Apathy,” has over 1.7 million views and translations into 37 languages. In addition, a CBC appearance involving towers of colourful LEGO drew 2.5 million views on Facebook. Most recently, he hosted the TV series Unrigged, guiding viewers through the barriers and blind spots of modern democracy and spotlighting practical solutions for a broken system.

He also launched the inaugural Ontario Municipal Democracy Index, measuring voter turnout, gender balance, BIPOC representation and UX design.

Beyond that, Meslin’s non-profit start-ups include the Toronto Public Space Committee, the Ranked Ballot Initiative of Toronto, City Idol, Spacing Magazine, Unlock Democracy Canada, the Downtown De-Fence Project, Dazzling Notice Awards, and DandyHorse Magazine. While he feels most comfortable with small grassroots non-profits, he has also donned a suit and tie as an Executive Assistant at City Hall and Queen’s Park.

How To Build A Culture Of Participation.

Voter turnout is reaching all-time lows. But outside of politics, disengagement also affects our workplaces, schools, professional associations, unions, and even our neighbourhoods. For a variety of reasons, people are turning their backs on the institutions in their lives. Dave breaks down the barriers to engagement and explains how to create a meaningful culture of participation that encourages higher levels of involvement. Each presentation is custom-designed for the specific needs of the client, audience and event.

Agents Of Change: A Primer On Creative Activism

Political advocacy is how we make positive change in the world. There is no magical recipe, but with the right tools and knowledge, anyone can design an effective campaign to move the needle toward a political goal. Dave explains the ABCs of political organizing, the pitfalls, and tips for success. This training applies to groups of any size, from small grassroots efforts to large organizations trying to improve their government relations.

A War On Apathy: Imagining A New Politics

Our democracy is at a crossroads. Elections feel hollow, and our legislatures have become toxic. Fierce partisanship, centralized power, and distorted election results all contribute to our growing cynicism. Voters are increasingly turning towards the angriest candidates or simply tuning out completely. Dave’s best-selling book Teardown reminds us that the future of our species doesn't need to look like a trainwreck. That we're capable of so much more. It's time to raise our expectations: of the system, of each other and of ourselves. Only then can we re-imagine a new democracy, unrecognizable from today's political mess. Dave’s book and TV series is a recipe for change. A cure for cynicism. A war on apathy.
